A large section of Bethany Beach near the boardwalk was closed in Delaware after an anti-aircraft explosive was washed ashore by a dredging pump. The police had no way to tell if the piece of munition, of a kind used by the U.S. military 40 years ago, was explosive or not, and proceeded on the assumption that it was. The munition was uncovered by dredges that are used to replenish the beach's sand. It has been reported that many more munitions possibly litter the area, due to the military's extensive testing of such weapons at sea.
